Racing Returns to North Wilkesboro Speedway

On Tuesday, November 10, 2009, a press conference was held to announce the great news about racing returning to historic North Wilkesboro Speedway. Among the 200 attending were NASCAR legends Junior Johnson, Bobby Allison, Ned Jarrett and Terri Parsons, widow of former NASCAR champion, Benny Parsons. Many other racing families, fans, local officials and business leaders were also present for this exciting news.

Alton McBride Jr. and team with Speedway Associates Inc. have announced it has signed a three-year lease on North Wilkesboro Speedway with an exclusive option to buy from billionaire race track owner Bruton Smith. The first race is scheduled for coveted first weekend in October 2010, which was the traditional fall weekend that hosted NASCAR's racing for many years. The 0.625 mile track was a dirt track when built in 1946 and was then paved in 1958.   Racing was held at the track from NASCAR's start in 1949 until the track closed after its fall race in 1996.
