- The Town collects bulky items Monday through Friday. BULK2

- Bulk item collection is for single-family and residential units only.  

- Residents shall call the Public Works Department at 336-838-0188 of bulk items to be collected by the Town of Wilkesboro. If no answer, please leave message with name, address and telephone number. 

- Weight limits and fees will apply to the collection of bulk goods. If a customer fills a truck with bulky items to such an extent that it requires a trip to the landfill, the customer will be required to pay for the tipping fee and mileage which will be assessed at the current rate. 

- Unacceptable bulky, unapproved electronics, or banned items will not be collected. The citizen must take to the landfill for disposal themselves.

- Approved electronics or large loads - please contact Public Works for appointment.

- After notification to Public Works, a truck will be delivered and, at the discretion of the Public Works Director, loaded by the resident. A service fee will be assessed as listed in a fee schedule approved by the Town Council. Each resident must complete and sign a Town of Wilkesboro Truck Policy Statement. Charges for collection will be invoiced by Public Works Department. 

- Non-residential illegal dumping or burning of bulky items is not permitted.

What Bulky Items CAN be collected curbside?

checkmarkTelevision & Computer Equipment - must be dropped off at Public Works Department or by appointment only.

checkmark Large white goods, such as refrigerators, washers, dryers or dishwashers - make sure no children can gain access to appliances while awaiting collection. Penalty, see § 51.99

checkmark Lawn equipment such as mowers, trimmers, wheelbarrows - must remove gasoline.

checkmark Bicycles - tires must be removed.

checkmark Large glass items such as windows, doors, mirrors, plate glass - must have glass taped with an X so it will not shatter in the collection process.

 What Bulky Items CANNOTbe collected curbside?

Consult with Wilkes County Landfill by resident for disposal. 

x mark red  Commercial tree trimmers, lawn care care services, contractors, builders, etc. shall dispose of their own limbs, trees, leaves, shrubbery, underbrush, building materials & refuse before leaving their job sites. If not removed, the removal is the property owners responsibility to dispose of at the Wilkes County Landfill.

x mark red Hazardous refuse or industrial waste
x mark red Building materials - must be removed by property owner or contractor
x mark red Items that are a consequence of a fire
x mark red Furnaces & central air conditioner units

x mark red Hypodermic syringes, needles or any items for injections that are not in a milk jug, coffee can or other container with a lid.

Notice:  The recycle truck has an automatic arm to lift the carts {see image of truck}. For this reason, glass MUST be recycled in a different container from other recyclables.This means you will have two (2) containers at your curb: one large rollout recycle cart AND one small glass container.

The large rollout recycle cart were distributed by Public Works Department. All approved items but glass can be co-mingled in this rollout cart. 

***DO NOT BAG RECYCLABLE ITEMS WITHIN YOUR LARGE ROLLOUT RECYCLE CART. PLEASE THROW IT IN YOUR ROLLOUT CART ALL TOGETHER. If you bag your recyclable items, it will not be picked up until un-bagged. The Town's vendor has started enforcing this rule immediately.***

This means you will have two (2) containers at your curb: one large recycle cart AND one small glass container. 
Recycling items should follow G.S.130-309.10 and all recyclables need to be clean, free of food and debris and all lids removed.

  • One Large 65 gal. Blue Recycling Cart - Provided by the town to all citizens.

  • One Small Glass Recycling Container - Must be purchased by citizens.

You may purchase one from the town for $15.00 at Wilkesboro Town Hall OR a container with or without a lid may be purchased from a retailer of your choosing BUT it must be marked glass recycling.

  • Yard waste CANNOT be placed in any recycling cart or containers.

  • Cart users are responsible for keeping the large rollout recycling cart(s) clean and in good repair. This helps to keep the price of your sanitation bill lower.

  • Recycling cart(s) and glass recycling container(s) may be placed curbside after 7:00 pm the night before and must be removed by 7:00 pm on the day of pickup.

  • The town is under no obligation to treat unmarked glass recycling containers/carts, unapproved recycling items or bagged recycling in your large rollout recycling cart(s) as recycling. It will be picked with regular trash. The citizen will get a violation notice on their recycle cart for non-compliance.

****** Please NO APPOINTMENTS or INDIVIDUAL PICKUPS during the fall collection period.****** 

During the fall, the crews start collecting at one end of town and collects throughout the town until whole town is collected. Once whole town is collected, the route starts over.

 - Yard waste collection is for single-family and residential units only.

 - Please rake or place leaves only at the curb for collection. Do not block roads, ditches or any stormwater areas.

 - Town rollout carts should not be used for leaves or yard waste of any type.

 - Do not place leaves in bags. 

- Leaves only!! Make sure the leaf piles are free of any debris such as rocks, bottles, cans, limbs, sticks, any metal or solid substances so it does not damage our vacuum truck or equipment or hurt the crew. Leaves will not be picked up until leaves are separated from other debris.

- Damage to equipment due to improper preparation of material will result in a fine being applied to the customer's account.

- The solid waste division may decline to collect any yard waste that is not prepared or placed for collection in accordance with these regulations or exceeds the maximum amount.

- There may be occasions when the amount of yard waste or leaf collection exceeds processing capacity. When this occurs, the waste will be collected at the earliest convenience or next scheduled collection day, whichever is sooner according to manpower and equipment.
